Values are means ± 1 s.e.m. (N). The data were analysed by two-way ANOVA with treatment group and social status as factors. In neither case was there a significant interaction term between these two factors. Thus, *significant effect of social status (dominant vssubordinate); significant effect of treatment group(control vs cortisol-treated) (two-way ANOVA; for SGR, P=0.012 for treatment group, P<0.001 for social status and P=0.154 for interactions between these two factors; for CFf, P=0.129 for treatment group, P=0.006 for social status and P=0.113 for interactions).
