β, rate constant of fertilization; β0, rate constant of collision; logFC50, log-transformed sperm concentration at which 50% fertilization is achieved.

Values of β were derived from a non-linear regression fit of the fertilization kinetics model to the data for each trial.

The ratio β/β0 was calculated using values forβ 0 of 0.0149 and 0.0025 mm3s-1 for intact and coat-free eggs, respectively.

The concentration FC50 was estimated by iteration usingβ and other model parameters (Table 1).

Mean values of β for coat-free eggs did not differ significantly between the two removal methods (t=0.11, P<0.09).
