Cover: Archerfish are renowned for using water jets to knock down aerial prey from considerable distances. Gerullis et al. (jeb233718) describe how shooting archerfish tightly coordinate rapid fin maneuvers with the formation of their water jets. Based on a detailed analysis of the timing of fin action and of systematic changes made when the fish changed their jets to engage targets at different distances, the study suggests that the newly discovered fin maneuvers play a crucial role in archerfish shooting and efficiently stabilize the shooter against recoil from its jet. To help save animals from extinction, it’s important to understand what each species needs to survive. This led Jason John et al. to measure the metabolic rates of captive belugas to develop a ‘fish calculator’ showing that the whales need to eat ~23 salmon per day.
