In contrast, the pelagic stingray (Pteroplatytrygon violacea) likely never uses this type of locomotion and instead swims solely with pectoral fins. Other rays exhibit locomotion somewhere between these two extremes. Macesic and Summers (pp. 2003−2012) demonstrate that such differences in locomotor behavior are reflected in the flexural stiffness of the main pelvic fin skeletal element, suggesting that even relatively small forces can result in structural adaptations in the cartilaginous skeleton of elasmobranch fishes. New funding schemes for junior faculty staff
In celebration of our 100th anniversary, JEB has launched two new grants to support junior faculty staff working in animal comparative physiology and biomechanics who are within five years of setting up their first lab/research group.
