REVIEWS
Molecular regulation of Snai2 in development and disease
Summary: We discuss current understanding of the molecular mechanisms regulating Snai2 (Slug) expression, abundance and activity, outlining how these contribute to disease phenotypes or may impact therapeutic targeting of Snai2 dysregulation in human disease.
ER-associated degradation in health and disease – from substrate to organism
Summary: This Review highlights recent findings that have revolutionized our view on the vital importance of endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-associated degradation (ERAD) in health and disease.
SHORT REPORTS
An in vitro compartmental system underlines the contribution of mitochondrial immobility to the ATP supply in the NMJ
Summary: Mitochondria from motor neurons show lower motility along the axon, accumulate in the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) and contribute to the production of most of the NMJ ATP, unlike what is found in sympathetic neurons.
High-density lipoprotein or cyclodextrin extraction of cholesterol from aggregated LDL reduces foam cell formation
Summary: High-density lipoprotein specifically and dose dependently extracts free cholesterol from aggregated LDL in the context of atherosclerosis, adding new complexity to the role of high-density lipoprotein in foam cell formation.
RESEARCH ARTICLES
Mammalian TRP ion channels are insensitive to membrane stretch
Summary: Mammalian TRP ion channels are insensitive to membrane stretch, suggesting that they function as secondary – rather than primary – mechanotransducers in cellular mechanotransduction processes.
A novel interplay between GEFs orchestrates Cdc42 activity during cell polarity and cytokinesis in fission yeast
Summary: Cdc42 GEFs Gef1 and Scd1 crosstalk to fine-tune Cdc42 activity. This crosstalk promotes bipolar growth and maintains cell shape in fission yeast.
TRIM32, but not its muscular dystrophy-associated mutant, positively regulates and is targeted to autophagic degradation by p62/SQSTM1
Highlighted Article: Mutations in the E3 ligase TRIM32 associated with the muscular dystrophy disease LGMD2H, impair its autophagic degradation and its ability to activate the autophagy receptor p62/SQSTM1.
MUNC18-1 regulates the submembrane F-actin network, independently of syntaxin1 targeting, via hydrophobicity in β-sheet 10
Highlighted Article: MUNC18-1 regulates secretory vesicle docking, syntaxin1 targeting and the F-actin network. A hydrophobic residue in SM proteins is necessary and sufficient for F-actin regulation but this is not rate-limiting for secretion.
Hmgcr promotes a long-range signal to attract Drosophila germ cells independently of Hedgehog
Highlighted Article: Hmgcr expression attracts Drosophila germ cells in a dose-dependent and paracrine fashion over distances above 50 µm in vivo, which does not require either the Wunens or Hedgehog.
Imaging Cell Architecture and Dynamics
We are still welcoming submissions for our upcoming Special Issue: Imaging Cell Architecture and Dynamics. This issue will be coordinated by two Guest Editors: Lucy Collinson (The Francis Crick Institute, UK) and Guillaume Jacquemet (University of Turku, Finland). Extended submission deadline: 29 March 2024.
