This thank you comes later in the year than we would have anticipated, but unfortunately COVID-19 put paid to a number of plans. We still feel it is important, however, to recognise the time and expertise that our reviewers provide, as well as their contribution to maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the published record.

We are always looking for ways to improve the service we offer to authors and readers, and last year we focused on improving transparency: we started publishing peer reviews reports, naming the handling Editor on all of our research papers, and we removed the option for reviewers to include confidential comments to the Editor.

This year, we are thinking about how to show our appreciation to reviewers. We announced a partnership with Publons last year, which gives reviewers formal recognition of their peer review contributions, but we are looking at additional measures this year. Look out for further announcements in the coming months.

We are tremendously grateful for the essential role that reviewers play in helping us to maintain the high standards of Journal of Cell Science. To all the reviewers of papers we published in 2019, thank you for your thoughtful and insightful guidance. The full list of reviewers and co-reviewers can be found in the supplementary information.
