RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS
HYPOTHESIS
Phyllotaxis as geometric canalization during plant development
Summary: Spiral patterns in plants follow precise mathematical rules. This Hypothesis shows how these patterns are progressively canalized during development by the physical interactions between the young organs at the tip of plant stems.
REVIEWS
Evolution and development of complex eyes: a celebration of diversity
Summary: This Review discusses the lens-containing eyes of a variety of Metazoa with a focus on ontogeny and highlights what evolutionary developmental biology continues to teach us about fundamental principles of biological systems.
The twists and turns of left-right asymmetric gut morphogenesis
Summary: This Review aims to shed new light on the development of laterality in the stomach and intestine, challenging classical models of left-right asymmetric gut morphogenesis.
Robust and efficient gene regulation through localized nuclear microenvironments
Summary: This Review examines transcriptional nuclear microenvironments in the context of embryogenesis, covering their formation, physical properties, functions in gene regulation and how they could facilitate the evolution of regulatory elements.
STEM CELLS AND REGENERATION
Diverse epithelial cell populations contribute to the regeneration of secretory units in injured salivary glands
Summary: Salivary glands rely on recruitment of differentiated cell populations as well as stem cells to ensure rapid regeneration and recovery of secretory cells.
SIX1 and SIX4 homeoproteins regulate PAX7+ progenitor cell properties during fetal epaxial myogenesis
Summary: The genesis of myogenic stem cells and their homing process during development are poorly known processes. We identified SIX homeoproteins as important regulators of this homing.
RESEARCH ARTICLES
Tek (Tie2) is not required for cardiovascular development in zebrafish
Summary: Mouse Tek mutants and zebrafish tek morphants display severe defects but zebrafish tek mutants do not; we show that tek morpholinos cause off-target effects and that tek is missing in most fish.
The membrane protein Raw regulates dendrite pruning via the secretory pathway
Summary: A novel and JNK-independent role of the membrane protein Raw is revealed in regulating the secretory pathway and thereby promoting dendrite pruning in Drosophila.
The Arabidopsis O-fucosyltransferase SPINDLY regulates root hair patterning independently of gibberellin signaling
Summary: The O-fucosyltransferase SPY regulates root hair patterning independently of DELLA proteins and gibberellin signaling when modulating epidermal tissue patterning in Arabidopsis thaliana roots.
Establishment of a relationship between blastomere geometry and YAP localisation during compaction
Highlighted Article: Localisation of YAP, a key factor during the first cell fate decision, is linked to individual blastomere geometry within the three-dimentional environment of the preimplantation embryo.
Gsx2 is required for specification of neurons in the inferior olivary nuclei from Ptf1a-expressing neural progenitors in zebrafish
Summary: The homeobox gene gsx2 mediates rostro-caudal positional signaling to specify the identity of neurons in the zebrafish inferior olivary nuclei from neural progenitors expressing the proneural gene ptf1a.
RAB6 GTPase regulates mammary secretory function by controlling the activation of STAT5
Summary: This study reveals a role for the Golgi-associated RAB GTPases RAB6A/A′ in the lactogenic function of the mammary gland.
SPAs promote thermomorphogenesis by regulating the phyB-PIF4 module in Arabidopsis
Highlighted Article: Four SUPPRESSOR OF PHYA-105 (SPA) genes destabilize the thermosensor phyB and are crucial for stabilizing PIF4 through direct phosphorylation, fine-tuning thermomorphogenesis in response to high ambient temperature.
The transcriptional repressor Bcl6 promotes pre-TCR-induced thymocyte differentiation and attenuates Notch1 activation
Summary: Bcl6 is required for pre-TCR-induced differentiation from CD4−CD8− double-negative to CD4+CD8+ double-positive cells in the thymus, and attenuates Notch1 signalling after β-selection.
Endogenous erythropoietin signaling regulates migration and laminar positioning of upper-layer neurons in the developing neocortex
Highlighted Article: Experimental deregulation of erythropoietin signaling results in an aberrant migration and a permanent neuronal mispositioning, leading to abnormal formation of neuronal networks and sensory behavioral deficits later in life.
Dual regulation of planar polarization by secreted Wnts and Vangl2 in the developing mouse cochlea
Summary: Planar cell polarity proteins regulate planar polarization. We show that secreted Wnts regulate a subset of planar cell polarity proteins, which coordinate with Vangl2 to govern sensory cell polarization.
IRX3/5 regulate mitotic chromatid segregation and limb bud shape
Highlighted Article: Iroquois transcription factors link morphogenesis to pattern formation by regulating chromatid segregation and promoting daughter cell intercalations that shape the early limb bud.
Development presents... live stream of our Journal Meeting

Watch a session from Development’s Journal Meeting, Unconventional and Emerging Experimental Organisms in Cell and Developmental Biology which was live on the Node Monday 18 September.
Navigating a research career with a disability

Our two recent Perspectives articles explore the lived experiences of disabled scientists in our community. Kelsey L. Anbuhl and colleagues describe the lived experiences of five biologists who share the challenges and successes of undertaking a scientific career with a disability. Whereas Jack Darius Morgan reviews the literature exploring disabled scientists’ experiences in academia.
Focus on regeneration

Tissue regeneration is a fascinating phenomenon, but the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying regeneration remain incompletely understood. Here, Development has collated a series of articles showcasing some of the most recent advances in regenerative biology.
Keeping up with the Node: Lab meetings

Keep up with the Node 'Lab meeting' posts as the platform regularly highlights development and stem cell biology labs from across the globe and showcases research and researchers from the community. August featured the Nichols lab at the University of Edinburgh, read their 'Lab meeting' article here.
Read & Publish Open Access publishing: what authors say

We have had great feedback from authors who have benefitted from our Read & Publish agreement with their institution and have been able to publish Open Access with us without paying an APC. Read what they had to say.
