Confocal image by Dr Javier Gilbert-Jaramillo, Dr Paul k. Reardon & Prof. William James of an unguided 3D cortical brain organoid recapitulating cortical development after 10 days of differentiation. Stained by immunofluorescence for neuronal markers Tuj1 (magenta) and Pax6 (green), and DAPI (blue). The work by Gilbert-Jaramillo and colleagues on the cellular metabolism of neuronal progenitors differentiated using a 2D method shows that these cells also recapitulate cortical development. This facilitated the discovery of specific metabolic alterations induced by Zika virus, which could potentially contribute to the pathophysiology over each trimester. MEETING REVIEW
New horizons of microphysiological systems: India forging its path in human-relevant research
Summary: Parvatam and colleagues elaborate on India's first meeting focused on Microphysiological Systems and how they hope to usher in a new era of 3D biology in the country.
A YEAR AT THE FOREFRONT
A Year at the Forefront of Bacterial Defense Systems Against Neutrophilic Oxidants
Summary: This a Year at the Forefront Review sheds light on the most recent developments in the field of bacterial responses and defenses against reactive oxygen and chlorine species
RESEARCH ARTICLES
Kinetics of Arf1 inactivation regulates Golgi organisation and function in non-adherent fibroblasts
Summary: This study uses Golgi disorganisation in non-adherent cells to test how differential Arf1 activation and kinetics of Arf1 inactivation could regulate Golgi organisation and function.
Zika virus-induces metabolic alterations in fetal neuronal progenitors that could influence in neurodevelopment during early pregnancy
Summary: Distinct metabolic alterations in neuronal progenitors at different stages of maturation during ZIKV infection may explain the pathophysiology over each trimester and highlight a therapeutic potential of metabolic remodelling.
Quantification of basal stem cell elongation and stress fiber accumulation in the pseudostratified airway epithelium during the unjamming transition
Summary: Quantitative analysis of the pseudostratified airway epithelium reveals basal stem cells and their stress fibers remodel during an unjamming transition.
Impaired fin regeneration and angiogenesis in aged zebrafish and turquoise killifish
Summary: Zebrafish and turquoise killifish are complementary models for aging studies. Aging reduced angiogenesis in regenerating caudal fin and anti-angiogenic pharmacological treatment reduced regeneration of aged caudal fin.
Metabolic shift towards oxidative phosphorylation reduces cell-density-induced cancer-stem-cell-like characteristics in prostate cancer in vitro
Summary: Cell density affects preferred metabolic pathway of prostate cancer cells, leading to CSC-like characteristics.
Differential effects of Mendelian GDAP1 clinical variants on mitochondria-lysosome membrane contacts sites
Summary: The relevance of mitochondria-lysosome membrane contact sites dysfunction as a primary event in axonopathies etiology, and as a key signaling hub opening novel therapeutic strategies in peripheral neuropathies, especially in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

The Forest of Biologists

The Forest of Biologists is a biodiversity initiative created by The Company of Biologists, with support from the Woodland Trust. For every Research and Review article published in Biology Open a native tree is planted in a UK forest. In addition to this we are protecting and restoring ancient woodland and are dedicating these trees to our peer reviewers. Visit our virtual forest to learn more.
Propose a new Workshop for 2025

Do you have an idea for a Workshop? We are now accepting proposals for our 2025 Biologists Workshops programme. As the scientific organiser, your involvement will be focused on the science. We'll take care of all the logistics. In 2025 we'll continue our efforts to diversify our Workshop programme and will be reserving one of our Workshops for an application from a Global South (GS) country to host an event overseas.
A Year at the Forefront Review

This A Year at the Forefront Review sheds light on the most recent developments in the study of bacterial response to and defence against reactive oxygen and chlorine species. Visit our online Open Access Journal to read all about Sadia Sultana and Jan-Ulrik Dahl's work.
Fast track

Have a paper that has been reviewed elsewhere? BiO is pleased to consider such manuscripts for fast-tracked decision making. Send us your manuscript together with the full set of reviews and decision letters, and we will make an initial decision in one week (or less).
