A section of the allantois of a mouse embryo, from a study by Sophie M. Morgani and Anna-Katerina Hadjantonakis, expressing TCF/LEF-H2B-GFP reporter of WNT signaling (the more widespread color) and SOX2 staining (orange) to mark the primordial germ cells (PGCs) and stained for DNA (grey). RESEARCH ARTICLES
KDM5A and KDM5B histone-demethylases contribute to HU-induced replication stress response and tolerance
Summary: We describe that KDM5A and KDM5B histone-demethylases contribute to hydroxyurea-induced replication stress tolerance, in part by regulating expression of ribonuclease reductase subunit RRM2.
A nematode-derived, mitochondrial stress signaling-regulated peptide exhibits broad antibacterial activity
Summary: The caenacin antimicrobial peptide CNC-4 is regulated by a mitochondrial recovery pathway and exhibits broad antibacterial activity.
High glucose induces Nox4 expression and podocyte apoptosis through the Smad3/ezrin/PKA pathway
Summary: The actin-membrane linker protein ezrin-related signaling plays a critical role in podocyte apoptosis through regulation of Nox4 expression and ROS production.
Mapping the transcriptomic changes of endothelial compartment in human hippocampus across aging and mild cognitive impairment
Summary: An integrative picture about the mechanisms operating in the hippocampal vasculature under normal and pathological scenarios is achieved by the computational dissection of microarray data corresponding to whole tissue samples and focusing on gene splice forms.
Quantitative analysis of signaling responses during mouse primordial germ cell specification
Summary: A subpopulation of pluripotent cells of the embryo give rise to the primordial germ cells (PGCs), the precursors of the sperm and egg, which pass on heritable genetic information to the next generation. To determine how PGCs are first segregated from the soma, we investigated BMP, MAPK and WNT signaling over time in PGCs and their surrounding niche in vitro and in vivo at single-cell resolution.
Auxin treatment increases lifespan in Caenorhabditis elegans
Summary: We report that auxin and auxin-inducible protein degradation tools alter lifespan in C. elegans.
Genome wide association study for the identification of genes associated with tail fat deposition in Chinese sheep breeds
Summary: This is a study on candidate genotyping of sheep with different tail types in China.

Read & Publish Open Access publishing: what authors say
We have had great feedback from authors who have benefitted from our Read & Publish agreement with their institution and have been able to publish Open Access with us without paying an APC. Read what they had to say.
Biology Open 2023 - a year in review
In this Editorial, BiO Editor-in-Chief Dan Gorelick reviews the journal's performance in 2023 and discusses his plans to improve author experience.
The Forest of Biologists
Our Publisher Claire Moulton recently visited the two Woodland Trust UK sites where we are planting new native trees for published Research and Review papers and protecting ancient woodland on behalf of our peer reviewers.
A Year at the Forefront
This series of Review articles aims to highlight the key discoveries, technological innovations, new resources and new hypotheses that have made an impact in a specific biological field during the past year. This publishing opportunity is available to early-career researchers, without a publication charge. Find out about eligibility and how to submit a proposal.
How we support early-career researchers
Biology Open, its sister journals and its not-for-profit publisher, The Company of Biologists, support early-career researchers in numerous ways, helping them grow their network and raise their profile. Find out what we can do to support you.
